Chickens

Chickens are probably the first animal that most smallholders will buy. However, if you've never kept chickens before then it can be difficult to chose a specific breed.

The first thing to ask yourself is why do you want the chickens? Do you want them to produce eggs? Or, do you want to try breeding chickens for meat production? Some breeds are more suited to egg production than meat and vice versa.

Good breeds to start with:

The following breeds are good all round birds - good egg production, but can also be used for meat and are quite hardy.

Black rock

The black rock is a well established breed and an excellent one for someone who has never kept chickens before. They are excellent layers and hardy little characters.

Hyline

The classic farmyard chicken - good for laying eggs. Not so good for meat production as the chickens are quite lean. Very nice temperament.

Bovan Nera

The Bovan Nera is a hybrid chicken, which is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a barred Plymouth Rock. It has some similarities to the Black Rock in appearance and in laying ability. So far I have been very impressed with their laying abilities.

Light Sussex

A traditional breed which is good for eggs and meat production. Doesn't lay as many eggs as the Bovan Nera or Hyline though.
